The Future of the ECHR – Preliminary reflections on the Chişinău Declaration

“On 14/15 May, Council of Europe Member States met in Chişinău (Republic of Moldova) during which a political declaration focussed on the European Convention on Human Rights was adopted by all 46 members, with a special focus on migration-related issues. This followed a short, five-month period of closely-scrutinised deliberation amongst states which sought to establish a new understanding of how the integrity of the ECHR could be retained in light of migration-related challenges in various Member States.

AGORA, in partnership with the Dublin European Law Institute at Dublin City University (DCU), was delighted to host a webinar offering a first reaction and preliminary reflections on the relevance of the Declaration as well as its possible impact(s) in member states and on the Convention System more broadly. The central concern was: does the Declaration enhance the integrity, resilience and prosperity of the European Convention on Human Rights system?

Speakers:

Prof. Robert Spano, Partner at Gibson Dunn and former President of the European Court of Human Rights
Prof Veronika Fikfak, University College London

The event was moderated by Dr Andrew Forde, Dublin City University (DCU).”
